Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The blast took place as police and firefighters approached the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the site and a third person who escaped after the blast was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been taken to the hospital.

The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the area displayed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the three family members in the past.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to debts incurred by the property owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the house. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told news outlets.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the Interior Minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast included eleven more officers of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the blast had occurred on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to local news, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
