At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the Red Command gang in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's history.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives stated. More than 80 people were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization reacted using shooting, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, officials said.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the security action, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".
